The End of DACA & Congress’ Task

Latest News

After the Trump administration announced the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in September, there has been mounting pressure to replace it with a new program. Both parties have been working to draft and champion legal protections for these immigrants, but the Republican leaders have ruled out reaching a solution before the end of the year. With a final deadline of March 5, 2018, it is clear that Congress is running out of time.

An Obama-era policy, DACA provided protection to undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. Many of the 700,000 immigrants who were childhood arrivals were very young when they were brought to the U.S., and don’t remember any other home. For these immigrants, called Dreamers, DACA was a way to get an education and pursue a career without the fear of deportation.

Support for these young adults is strong amongst the business and tech worlds, who recognize the economic impact Dreamers have, as workers, innovators, teachers, and consumers. Dreamers may be immigrants, but they are integrated into American culture and have received a U.S. education. Their status aside, they are Americans.

Protecting the Dreamers will be no easy feat. The fate of these young people has long been debated, and Congress has struggled to find a bipartisan solution that would be widely supported. Often, protecting Dreamers also comes with the cost of other immigration crackdowns in the Republican-controlled House and Senate. There are a number of proposed bills, which all seek to replace DACA.

The Republican BRIDGE ACT and Recognizing America’s Children Act are popular solutions within the party’s Congress representatives. For Democrats, the HOPE Act is being heavily championed in Congress. In the Senate, Republicans have introduced the SUCCEED Act. There is also bipartisan support for the decade-old DREAM Act, which provides a pathway to citizenship for young arrivals.

As bipartisan support for immigration reforms are growing, Democrats are agreeing to tighter security restrictions at the U.S.-Mexico border in exchange for protections for Dreamers. It is a slow fight, but immigration reform is starting to make its way through legislation.
