Is the End of DACA Imminent?

Attorneys general from ten Republican-led states are pushing for Trump to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This program grants deportation relief and work permits to approximately 788,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as young children. Republicans have called for the end of the Obama-era program since its beginning, and now they hope to pressure the Trump administration into cutting the program short.

The states urged the administration to rescind the June 20102 memorandum that created DACA, making their demands known in a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The letter called for the administration to allow the program to phase out by ceasing to accept new applications and not renewing existing applications. This decision would leave hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have spent most of their lives in the U.S. vulnerable to deportation. In exchange for ending the DACA program, the state leaders responsible for the letter offer to drop the litigation against broader deportation reprieves.

Despite his stance on immigration during his campaign, Trump has expressed that DACA would remain intact. While DACA beneficiaries, called Dreamers, are not being deported under the current leadership of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, he has reported that the program is under review.

Proponents of DACA hail the move to end the program as cruelty towards immigrants who were brought to the U.S. and often haven’t known any other home. DACA gives these immigrants the freedom and ability to pursue careers and their personal dreams without fear of deportation. Many DACA recipients have used their protection to pursue educational and career opportunities, which allow them to contribute to their community and the country they call home.
